Stucco

There are several types of stucco commonly used in construction:

Traditional or Portland cement stucco:

This is the most common type, consisting of cement, sand, and water. It's applied in multiple coats over a metal or wood lath base.

Synthetic stucco (EIFS):

This type uses synthetic materials such as polymers and foam insulation board. It's applied in layers, typically with a base coat, mesh reinforcement, and a finish coat.

Exterior Insulation and Finish System (EIFS):

This is a type of synthetic stucco that includes insulation board and a base coat applied over it, followed by a textured finish coat.

Acrylic stucco:

Made with acrylic polymers, this type offers increased flexibility and resistance to cracking. It's typically applied in two or three coats over a substrate.

Installation Methods for Different Types of Stucco

Installation methods vary depending on the type of stucco:

  • Traditional Cement Stucco:
The process involves preparing the surface, applying metal lath, then applying multiple coats of stucco mixture, allowing each coat to dry before applying the next.

  • Synthetic Stucco:
Installed similarly to traditional stucco but may require different types of base coats and mesh reinforcement.

  • EIFS (Exterior Insulation and Finish System):
Involves attaching insulation board to the substrate, applying a base coat with mesh reinforcement, and finishing with a textured topcoat.

  • Acrylic Stucco:
Typically applied similarly to traditional stucco but with acrylic-based materials, offering increased flexibility and durability.
